By developing a hierarchical modeling approach that integrates replicated detection-nondetection observations and data on the geographical distribution of species, we obtained estimates of species abundance for more than 1,200 species of woody plants over East Asian islands. The macroscale estimates of species abundance enabled us not only to infer macroevolutionary processes that are specific to ecoregions but also to conduct a systematic assessment of the national red list.
